Appointment as “Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors”
I attended this event by Embassy of Japan in Malaysia. The venue was Sushi Oribe 織部. It’s a great sushi restaurant that has created and led the omakase restaurant culture in Malaysia. (I have tried many times to book a table and have not yet to be successful!)
The event started with a speech by Ambassador Oka.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery of Japan (MAFF) appointed Mr. Ling Teck Chong, Thomas and Mr. KAWASAKI Naoya as its “Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassadors”.
Mr. Ling Teck Chong, Thomas is the Principal Partner of Entwine Consultancy. He plays a leading role in the promotion of Japanese sake in Malaysia.
I’m very appreciate as Japanese that he convey Japanese Sake and culture to Malaysia.
Mr. KAWASAKI Naoya ( NAO) is the Master Chef of “Sushi Oribe” located in Kuala Lumpur. He has contributed to the development of Japanese food and dietary culture in Malaysia.
NAO’s speech ( Summary):
“ 7 years ago, I came to Malaysia, Even though I could not speak English, Malaysians always helped me warmly in many ways, both work and life.
Without their support, I would not be standing here today. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kindness of Malaysian people.
As a Chef, I want to give something back to yours. what I can do for Malaysian is to provide "authentic Japanese food", which is an important cultural asset of this wonderful country called Japan.”
“Washoku (Japanese Cuisine)” was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013.
We expect the growing popularity of Japanese food and dietary culture in Malaysia to lead to a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and an increase in visitors from Malaysia to Japan.
