Japanese Film Festival 2023
The Japan Film Festival 2023 will be held again this year!
The festival will be held in September and October in five different regions within Malaysia.
In Johor Bahru, it is being screened at the GSC Cinema in Paradigm Mall during the four-day period from September 14-17.
Twelve titles of various genres ranging from animation to comedy, drama, romance, etc. will be screened. Each film is shown only once in Johor Bahru, so don't miss it!
Japanese film fans in Malaysia look forward to this event every year, and there is also a stamp rally where you can earn stamps by watching three films and receive a gift.
Tickets can be purchased through the GSC website, app, or at the box office.

Jazz Concert Come to JB!
For the past 5 years, I have been a huge fan of WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble. They are leading the jazz scene in Malaysia.
This time, the concert will be held at an opera house in Johor Bahru!
The theme is "Purnama" (which means "moon" in English).
I interviewed Mr. Tay Cher Siang, who is a jazz pianist, composer, and producer. He said,
"Given that it's also the season of the autumn moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, we are organizing a concert with the moon as its theme. We will present well-known songs, lesser-known pieces, and various moon-inspired tunes in a jazz style. We would be thrilled if the audience could enjoy the music while feeling the essence of the season."
I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to listen to their music in Johor Bahru!
The performance at the Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House on September 30,
2023, sounds like a delightful event.
The theme "Purnama" or "Full Moon" is quite intriguing, and the lineup of moon-themed songs is impressive. It's wonderful that the performance is coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival, adding a special cultural touch to the evening.
The selection of songs like "The Moon Represents My Heart," "Moonlight in the
City," "Moon River," and others certainly sets a mood of moonlit charm. The variety of moon-related music, from jazzy tunes to classical pieces, promises a rich and enjoyable experience for the audience.

Hidden bar without signboard.
I had been wanting to visit this place and recently I ran into the boss of this bar at a drinking event in Kuala Lumpur.
So I invited a friend to visit this week.
The boss, Mr. Vinc, is self-taught in cocktails and opened this bar. The space is minimalist and simple. The 160 bottles of liquor and liqueurs on display are not just for decoration but actually used.
The original and delicate cocktails were very tasty.
Some of the menu items I couldn't even imagine what they would taste like.
They also use their own blend of gin and whiskey.
The bar was full around 10pm on a Friday night.

看板のない隠れ家バー。この店に来てみたいと思っていたところ、先日クアラルンプールのお酒のイベントでこの店のボスに偶然お会いした。
なので今週、友人を誘って訪問。
ボスのVinc氏は独学でカクテルを学んでこのバーをオープン。ミニマリストなシンプルな空間。飾ってある160本のボトルのお酒やリキュールは、飾りだけでなく実際に使っているそう。
オリジナリティあふれる繊細なカクテルはとてもおいしかった。
どんな味か想像もつかないようなメニューもありました。
ジンやウィスキーも独自にブレンドしたものを使っています。
金曜の夜10時ごろには満席でした。

I attended this event at Exotic Japanese hidden bar “Ronin”.
Mr. Dexter (Ambassador & Liquor consultant ) introduced me this whisky and cocktails of it.
“Dewar's Japanese Smooth Mizunara Oak Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky 8 Year Old”
This is a Scotch whisky aged for 8 years.
This is the fourth in the Unique Cask series, which offers a variation of flavors by using different casks for the finishing maturation. Although this whisky is from Scotland, it is aged in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
This whisky is so highly regarded that it received 91 points in the American whisky magazine "Whisky Advocate“.
It has a strong Mizunara-derived aroma and a sweet taste that changes its expression with the passage of time. The highball with orange peel was outstanding, and the cocktail with yuzu and jasmine tea was refreshing and different.
I personally like the taste of this whiskey.
While enjoying these drinks and Japanese fusion foods, we watched Japanese drums (the boss was Japanese) and dancing. It was a wonderful evening for adults to enjoy.

-Nose: Earthy oak with a whiff of smoke, plus light hints of citrus oil.
-Palate: Sandalwood, plum, forest floor, toasted grain, and a touch of cinnamon.

モントキアラにあるビル「Arte」内の、隠れ家バー「Ronin」。エキゾチックな日本風の内装は、あたり一面デュワーズ8年ジャパニーズスムースで飾られていました。
友人の、リカーコンサルタントであり、主催の会社のアンバサダーでもあるDexter氏がいろいろと説明してくれました。
これは8年熟成させたスコッチウィスキー。
さまざまな樽を仕上げの熟成に使用することで、フレーバーのバリエーションを楽しめるユニークカスクシリーズの第4弾。スコットランド産のウィスキーですが、日本のミズナラの樽で熟成されています。
アメリカのウィスキー専門誌「ウィスキーアドボケート」で91ポイントを獲得するほど評価の高いウィスキー。
ミズナラ由来の香りがしっかりして、甘味がありながら時間の経過地とともに表情が変わります。オレンジピールを加えたハイボールは抜群の美味しさで、ゆずとジャスミンティーを加えたカクテルは爽やかでまた違った美味しさでした。
私は個人的にも好きな味のウィスキー。
これらのドリンクと日本ヒュージョンのピンチョスをいただきながら、和太鼓(ボスは日本の方)やダンスなどを鑑賞。大人が楽しめる素敵な夜でした。

The evening cocktails will round out today's event. I was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful live music, mocktails with fresh coconut juice in the cocktails, fusion crepes and nasi lemak sushi.
And the special chocolate tower for this event was amazing! It's like a chocolate coral filled with so many sweets and appetizers. Amazing work! It tasted great too.
The Renaissance Hotel will be renovating this space in the future. I hope they will have a nice bar lounge.
It was a great day to explore and get to know the culture of Johor.

朝8時にお揃いのTシャツを来て集合。GM:Kanit 氏の挨拶に始まり、朝食は作りたてのラクサジョホール、ロティのハンドロール、お好みクロワッサン、コーヒーとテタリ。とてもおいしい。

男性がシルクを着るのはハラムでいけないんだそうですよ。知らなかった。

ローカルアーティストの作品を展示する美術館へ。
現在行われているのは、(5月末まで)、アラビア文字とマレーシアの昔も文字を使用したアートの展示会。
私はさっぱり読めないけど、ジョホールのマレー人はアラビックの教育を受けているから読めて意味も分かるそうで、訳してくれた。ポエムとか心に留めておきたい言葉とか。
ワークショップはナプキンの色染め。綺麗。

今日のイベントを締めくくるのはイブニングカクテル。生演奏で素敵な音楽、カクテルにフレッシュココナツジュースを使用したモクテル、ヒュージョンクレープやナシレマ寿司など、とても美味しくて驚きました。
そしてこのイベントのためのスペシャルチョコレートタワーがすごい！チョコレートのサンゴのようなものに、たくさんのお菓子やアペタイザーが詰まってる。すごい作品！味も美味しかった。
今後ルネッサンスホテルではこのスペースを改装するそう。素敵なバーラウンジができることを願っています。
ジョホールの文化を探求して知ることができる、素晴らしい1日でした。

I attended culinary school’s lunch event.
Teacher and Students cooked 5 dishes for us, we enjoyed.
The Salmon Wellington was a thin pie encased in juicy salmon and spinach duxelles. The pie was not too overpowering and the sour sauce matched well with the taste of a fine restaurant.
The Earl Grey Berry Mousse also had a good balance of sweet and sour.
It is nice to be able to make such an authentic dish.
Credo F&B Academy opened around 1 years ago. They teach mainly Western cuisine, Pastry and bakery.
There is internship program to restaurants.
Of the many culinary schools in JB, this school is notable for its ability to offer tailor-made lessons.
They will suggest best classes plan depends on your require, schedule and budget.

今日は料理学校のランチイベントに招待いただきました。
先生と生徒が5種の料理を作ってくださり、美味しくいただきました。
サーモンウェリントンは、薄いパイにジューシーなサーモンとほうれん草のデュクセルが包まれています。パイの存在感が強過ぎず、酸味のあるソースもよく合って高級レストランの味でした。
アールグレイベリーのムースも甘さと酸味のバランスがよく、とても美味しかったです。
このような本格的な料理が作れるようになるのは良いですね。
クレドF&Bアカデミーは、約1年前に開校しました。西洋料理、ケーキ、ベーカリーを中心に教えています。
レストランへのインターンシッププログラムもあります。
JBにある多くの料理学校の中で、この学校の特筆すべきことは「オーダーメイドレッスンができること」です。

Tiffin Musical Mural Charity Night

My friend introduced me, I attended this event.
Grand Straits Garden, a long-established seafood Chinese restaurant that relocated and opened about a month ago in Legend Park, which is located in the heart of the city but is still a hidden gem.
This is a truly luxurious event where you can enjoy delicious Chinese food and listen to a performance by pianist Kok Kee Boon in this one-of-a-kind space.
The beautiful tiffins on display and for sale were made by the NGO Jeiwa.
Since its establishment in October 2015, the NGO, known as JEIWA, which stands for the Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Association, has been working to help DV victims and women in need of support regain their confidence and develop the skills to contribute to their communities again.
The NGO paints and sells tiffins as part of its activities. (Currently 60 people are making them.)
In addition to this, JEIWA is continuously involved in charity and various projects in which women are active, and JEIWA is now a permanent member and presenter at the World Women's Conference, an annual international-level event.
Ina Fadilah, the president of JEIWA, is a friendly, passionate, charming, and attractive woman who told us that "it is all about relationships.”
I was surprised to learn that she is the portrait on the packaging of Hershey's chocolates, a symbol of a wonderful Malaysian woman.
Her dream for the near future is to operate a glamping resort as Jeiwa and offer a nice, traditional, and sustainable stay by reducing waste with her own products such as Tiffin.
The venue for this event was a unique space in JB. I quite like the chaotic beauty of this place.
All the murals and paintings were painted by owner Bruce Lee during the Corona period. The space is a mix of Western and Chinese, classic and modern, gorgeous and chic, and everything else is "in my head," he says.
Chinese food here is wonderful!

友人の紹介により、このプライベートチャリティーイベントに招待いただきました。
街の中心部にありつつ穴場なLegend Parkの中に、1ヶ月ほど前に移転オープンした老舗のシーフード中華レストラン「Grand Straits Garden」。その唯一無二な空間で、おいしい中華をいただきながら、ピアニストのKok Kee Boon氏による演奏を聴くというなんとも贅沢なイベント。
展示販売された美しいティフィンの数々は、NGOのJeiwaによるもの。
2015年10月の設立以来、JEIWA（Johor Empowerment of Intellectual Women Associationの略称）として知られるこのNGOは、DV被害者や支援が必要な女性が自信を取り戻し、再び地域社会に貢献できるスキルを身につけるための活動として、ティフィンの絵付けをし、販売しています。(現在60名が制作しているそう。)
それ以外にも継続的にチャリティーや女性が活躍するさまざまなプロジェクトに取り組んでおり、今ではJEIWAは、毎年国際レベルのイベントである「世界女性会議」の常任メンバーであり、プレゼンターを務めています。
代表のIna Fadilah 氏は、気さくでパッションに溢れ、チャーミングで魅力的な女性で、「すべて人との関わりが大事だ」と話してくれました。
素敵なマレーシアの女性の象徴として、ハーシーズチョコレートのパッケージにも描かれている肖像画か彼女だと知って驚きました。
近い将来の夢は、Jeiwaとしてグランピングリゾートを運営し、Tiffin等の自社製品によって、素敵で伝統的、かつ、ごみの削減によって持続可能なステイを提供したいそうです。
今回のイベントの会場は、JBで唯一無二の空間でした。私はこのカオスな感じな美しさがかなり好きです。
壁画や絵などは全て、オーナーのBruce Lee氏がコロナの時期に描いたそう。西洋風、中華風、クラシックだったりモダンだったりゴージャスやシックや、全てがミックスされた空間は、「僕の頭の中」だそうです。
ここでいただく中華料理って素敵！

I want Every Johorian see this!
A wonderful performance by a total of 45 members of “24 Festive Drums” and “Orang Orang Drum Theatre” the art form that originated in JB.
A performance that everyone can enjoy, understand the history, gasp at the power and sharpness of the performance, laugh, clap hands, and have experience into the music.
I am glad that this originated with JB and that it is being performed in a lovely opera house. I am deeply moved that we can finally experience a cultural event at JB.
I received a ticket from the producer, Mr. Lee Liang, and went to see the show.
It was even better than I expected and the 120 minutes flew by.
Inspired by a Taiwanese poem that describes the beauty of spring, summer, fall, and winter by dividing them into 24 seasons, a performance with 24 drums was started in JB in 1988. (The 24 words were later recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2016.)
The history of this area can be seen in the play.
(You can also read more about it in the book "My Johor Story 3" by Peggy Loh.)
I would love to go see the show again and hope that students from all schools in Johor will come to see it as an extracurricular learning experience.

すべてのジョホーリアンに観てほしい！
JB発祥の芸術「24 Fedtive Drums」と「Orang Orang Drum Theatre 」の総勢45名による素晴らしい迫力あるパフォーマンス。
誰もが楽しめて、歴史がわかり、迫力と研ぎ澄まされた演技に息を呑み、笑い、手を叩き、音楽に身を任せるという経験ができるパフォーマンス。
これがJB発祥で、素敵なオペラハウスで上演されているということが嬉しい。やっと文化的な催しにもJBでも触れられるようになったと感慨深いです。
プロデューサーのLee Liang 氏からチケットをいただき、観に行きました。
期待以上の素晴らしさで、120分があっという間。
台湾の詩にある、春夏秋冬の美しさをを24の季節に分けて表す言葉からインスピレーションを得て、24個の太鼓によるパフォーマンスがJBで1988年にはじまりました。(のちに、この24の言葉はユネスコの世界遺産に2016年に認定。)
このあたりの歴史が劇中でもわかるようになっています。

また観に行きたいし、ジョホールの全ての学校の生徒が課外学習で観にくるようになったら良いと思いました。次回の公演も楽しみにしています！

Yスペースに訪れた時、初めてこのブランドと出会いました。
モダン、キュート、エレガント、そしてバティックのデザインがミックスされた、とてもユニークなブランド。かしこまった席だけでなく、普段でも着ることができそうなデザインもたくさんあります。
今回のラヤ2023コレクションでは、よりエレガントに感じました。そして、ヒジャブのギフトシリーズ(ティフィンや瓶やカゴに入っています。)も追加されました。
美しいYスペースギャラリーにて、キュートなハイティーセットをいただきつつのファッションショー。
お土産の、お茶で書いたデッサンやクッキーも素敵。

I attended Wine Pairing dinner hosted by Barone RICASOLI’s Brand Ambassador: Mr. Diego Sebastian Todone at favourite Flame Grill Restaurant.
Ricasoli is the most representative wine producer in the Chianti Classico area, Italy.
We enjoyed 4kinds of RICASOLI wine.
Smoked tuna served with a rich peanut mustard sauce is paired with a excellent rosé wine.
The grilled Caesar salad with plenty of cheese is paired with a white Chardonnay.
Rich Onion soup with cider followed by savory duck roast with two different red wines to compare.
The wines were present and elegant even when paired with FirePitz's savory, robust, and impactful dishes.
We finished with a pineapple dessert.

お気に入りの直火焼きレストランにて、バローネ・リカソーリのブランドアンバサダー、ディエゴ・セバスチャン・トドネ氏が主催するワインペアリングディナーに参加しました。
リカソーリは、イタリアのキャンティ・クラシコ地区を代表するワイン生産者です。
今回はお料理に合わせて、4種類のこのイタリアワインを楽しみました。
濃厚なピーナッツマスタードソースでいただくスモークしたマグロには、華やかなロゼワインを合わせて。
たっぷりのチーズをかけたグリルドシーザーサラダには、シャルドネの白を。
濃厚なシードル入りのオニオンスープの後には、香ばしい鴨ローストに、2種の赤ワインを飲み比べながら。
FirePitzの、香ばしい、しっかりとインパクトのあるお料理に合わせても、存在が引き立ち、エレガントさを感じるワインでした。
パイナップルのデザートでフィニッシュ。

I attended the event “ IN-TEA-MATE TASTING SESSION “.
THE COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAVES is California brand since 1963.
I tend to order coffee, but they are also particular about the quality of the tea.
Today, I attended to a tea drinking event.
We compared Lung Ching tea, Ceylon tea, and peach jasmine tea, and tasted them with cakes and pies, also tried cold brew tea while listening to a lecture.
As a major café with more than 130 stores in Malaysia alone, I had assumed that they purchase tea leaves in bulk from trading companies, etc. However, I was told that David, the tea master, visits tea farmers one by one, examines their teas, and purchases directly from them. He uses only natural ingredients in all of flavored teas and picks only the two newest leaves, in his pursuit of delicious tea.
Knowing this, I decided to order a variety of teas in addition to coffee in the future.
They currently offer 16 types of tea, and the 3 most popular are English Breakfast, Earl Grey, and Japanese Genmai Cha (brown rice tea).

ついコーヒーを注文しがちですが、お茶にもこだわって上質なものを提供しています。
今日は、お茶飲み比べイベントに招待いただき、伺いました。
龍井茶とセイロンティー、ピーチジャスミンティーの飲み比べ、ケーキやパイとのマリアージュ、コールドブリューティーについてのレクチャーを伺いながら味わいました。
マレーシアだけでも130店舗以上もある大手のカフェなので、商社などから一括で茶葉を仕入れているだろうと思っていましたが、そうではなく、ティーマイスターのデビッド氏が1軒1軒お茶農家を訪問し、吟味して直接買付しているとのこと。フレーバーティーもすべて天然素材のみ使用し、新芽の2葉だけを摘み取るなど、おいしいお茶を追求しています。
それを知って、今後、コーヒーだけではなくさまざまお茶もオーダーしてみようと思いました。
現在16種のお茶を提供していますが、人気ベスト3は、イングリッシュブレックファースト、アールグレイ、そして日本の玄米茶だそうです。
